In late April 2010 News International approached Jigsaw with a brief to take Britain’s best-selling newspaper, the Sun, on to the iPad. The move was a key part of News International’s digital strategy, to deliver content to its current readers in new interactive formats, and to broaden its readership by appealing to a wider demographic.
The app had to replicate the print edition, and also include an ‘iEdition’ which would update as news broke throughout each day. Other required elements included dynamic menu navigation, interactive maps, billing functionality, and a subscription management system. Readers are invited to download the app for £4.99 per month, for which they receive 24 copies.
The timescales for the project were short and the brief challenging but the results are incredible. Working in conjunction with News International’s development team, Jigsaw built a newspaper-reading component into its backend technology, in order to replicate the page-turning experience. It makes the act of reading The Sun on an iPad an immersive, highly interactive experience.
In the first 36 hours after launch the app was No.1 in the UK app store.
