Our first project for The Sun was also their first stand-alone mobile app that was not directly linked to one of the newspaper’s properties.
For the 2010 Grand National, The Sun’s owner, News International, asked Jigsaw to create The Sun Grand National Sweepstake Shaker. Users shake their iPhone to choose their horses and have their picture taken in the correct jockey silks. The app remembers the details and creates a unique sweepstake poster that users can email to themselves, print out and display. After the race, the app tells you whether your horse won.
The app went live in the App Store the week before the race and was downloaded more than 7,000 times in the first week, making it one of the Top 25 free downloads on iTunes. As a result of the success of the app, Jigsaw was asked to create versions of the app for the soccer World Cup and Wimbledon tennis tournament.
Both retain the ‘shake to select’ feature, but the World Cup also has team fan packs containing flags, key player profiles and useful phrases.
